MODEL DESCRIPTION

The ZOE Shirt is a simple mohair shirt with drop shoulders and a round neckline. This shirt can be knitted in two different versions. The slim version has minimal drop shoulders, while the relaxed version has bat-wing-style sleeves.

The ZOE Shirt is worked top-down in one piece, with increases along the shoulders to shape the back and front. Once the desired width has been reached, the front and back are worked separately down to the underarm, then joined again to work the body in the round, in one piece, with decreases until the body reaches the desired circumference. The length of the shirt can be adjusted to your preference, and you will find guidance on adjusting the width in the pattern.

The hem is cast off directly from the body stitches with an I-cord. For the neckline, you will pick up stitches around the neckline opening and then cast off with an I-cord.

NEEDLES

Needle tips: 4.5 mm (I-cord bind-off), 5.5 mm (WS rows) and 6 mm (RS rows)

Cable: 60 to 100 cm depending on size

PATTERN AND KNITTING GAUGE

In Stockinette St (RS rows knit, WS rows purl): 16 stitches x 22 rows = 10 x 10 cm

on 6 mm needles for the RS rows and 5.5 mm needles for the WS rows.

Since my purl stitches tend to run larger than my knit stitches, I use a smaller needle size for the WS rows. This is just a tip, choose the needle sizes that work for your gauge.

NOTIONS

The increases on this shirt are marked with different-colored stitch markers (M) so you can easily distinguish each section at a glance:

  • 4 M-C1 (Color 1) shoulder stitches
  • 4 M-C2 (Color 2) shoulder increases
  • 4 M-C3 (Color 3) neckline increases (2 x 1), edge stitches (2 x 2)
  • 1 BOR-M (Color 4) beginning of round

Spare cables or scrap yarn to leave stitches on hold, a cable needle or DPN, a tapestry needle, scissors

Backward loop cast-on, knit and purl stitches, increases inclined to the right and to the left on RS and WS rows, short rows (German Short Rows), decreases inclined to the right and to the left, picking up stitches around the neckline, I-cord bind-off
