SIA Blouse – Top Down Raglan Sweater. Simple & Seamless.

The SIA Blouse is an airy, lightweight mohair sweater with a comfortably relaxed fit. It is meant to neither be too loose nor too snug, so that it fits easily under a blazer. It is also just roomy enough for layering without feeling restrictive. In short, the SIA Blouse is a lightweight mohair sweater for everyday wear, with a deliberately understated design that lets you style it in many different ways.

The simple raglan construction is worked from the top down in the round and is ideal for advanced beginners. Short rows at the front neckline give it the perfect fit. They are worked back and forth within the round, and the pattern explains them in detail, stitch by stitch and row by row. The SIA Blouse is completely seamless.

The pattern includes two versions, each with its own yarn amounts and instructions: a classic long-sleeved version, and a modern shirt version with a short sleeve that extends only slightly past the shoulder.

The SIA Blouse is worked top-down in one piece. Increases along the raglan lines create the stitches for the back, front, and sleeves. Once the raglan yoke has reached the desired width, the sleeve stitches are separated and placed on hold, and the front and back are worked together in the round as a single piece for the body.

The sleeve stitches are then placed back on the needle, and additional stitches are picked up under the arm to avoid a hole. After that, you simply knit in the round to the desired length, with no decreases. For the shirt version, the stitches are bound off immediately after joining to work in the round.

All hems are finished with a thin, discreet I-cord that doesn’t add any bulk.

NEEDLES

Needle tips: 5.5 mm (left needle tip) and 6 mm (right needle tip)

Cable: 20, 40, and 60 to 100 cm depending on the size you are working

A crochet hook, approx. size 5 mm

BASIC PATTERN AND GAUGE

In stocking stitch – knit all sts in the round, or knit all sts on RS rows and purl all sts on WS rows:

16 stitches x 22 rows = 10 x 10 cm

on 6 mm needles for RS rows and 5.5 mm for WS rows.

Tip: Using a smaller needle size on the left needle makes it easier when knitting in the round. It is also useful for working short rows, as working WS rows on a smaller needle size helps achieve a more even fabric.

NOTIONS

This pattern uses stitch markers (M) in different colors, so you can easily tell the individual sections apart at a glance:

  • 1 BOR-M (Color 0) beginning of the round
  • 8 M-C1 (Color 1) raglan stitches
  • 8 M-C2 (Color 2) raglan increases

Spare knitting cables or scrap yarn to leave stitches on hold, a tapestry needle, scissors

Scrap yarn in a contrasting color for the provisional cast-on. A smooth yarn is best, so the provisional cast-on is easy to remove later.

KNITTING TECHNIQUES

Provisional cast-on with a crochet hook, knit and purl stitches, right- and left-leaning increases on RS and WS rows, short rows (German Short Rows), backward loop cast-on, I-cord bind-off
